Grammarly: What is it?

Since 2009, Grammarly has been widely used across the globe. It’s a complex artificial intelligence (AI) system that has been tuned and enhanced over time by linguists and engineers who created algorithms to discover effective writing patterns. Grammarly claims that its AI system goes through each sentence and looks for acceptable alternatives for any faults it finds. It’s a web-based application with desktop variants that connect with Microsoft Word and Outlook as well.

Grammarly’s Methodology

Grammarly assigns an overall score to your content depending on the number of faults and mistakes discovered. The programme then takes you through various probable grammar issues one by one. The system provides both a brief and lengthy explanation for each case found. These explanations provide examples of proper grammar use. In some circumstances, the system will propose specific language choices.

However, the user must make any particular adjustments—Grammarly will not compel you to do so. If you disagree with the suggested adjustments, you can choose to ignore potential issues. Misspellings are highlighted, along with a list of possible alternatives. A plagiarism checker can assist authors in identifying any information that has been stolen accidentally. The algorithm offers citations that might be used to legitimate the content in the issue by pointing out comparable text that exists elsewhere. A synonym checker is included, allowing users to minimise repetition by selecting alternative terminology. Grammarly also gives you reasons for proposed modifications and details on the sort of error you committed.

What is the Grammarly browser plugin, and how does it work?

Grammarly has a Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge plugin. First, examine the top bar of your browser to see if the extension has been installed. The Grammarly icon will appear if the addon is activated. Once you’ve installed the extension, you should be able to view Grammarly’s writing recommendations as you type on various websites.

Text-checking

The Grammarly logo should appear in the lower-right corner when you click into a text field. Grammarly will start checking your content dynamically as soon as you start typing, and the Grammarly symbol will spin. When Grammarly has finished reviewing the text, the number of suggestions will be displayed in the lower-right corner of the text box.

Some of the recommendations are highlighted in the text. Please hover over the underlined text and click on the suggestion that appears to accept it. If Grammarly suggests a new term and is confident it’s spelled correctly, you may ignore it or add it to your dictionary. Next, click the Grammarly icon or number in the lower-right corner of your text field to get the complete list of suggestions. This will bring up Grammarly’s floating sidebar, which you may move about on the screen as needed. In this sidebar, you can evaluate Grammarly’s suggestions and make adjustments. The Grammarly sidebar was created to help you quickly examine and apply our suggestions so that you may move it anywhere on your screen.  If the main section of your content isn’t highlighted, it’s a good idea to rearrange the paragraphs or shorten certain words. Grammarly will also give precise recommendations on making your work more readable.

Deactivating some sorts of suggestions

Specific recommendations, such as the Oxford comma and the flagging of passive voice, can be disabled. Grammarly‘s browser extension also has several tools that might assist you in improving your writing. Double-click a word to see its definition on any website.
